Investigation in Bond Trading and Potential Spoofing

12 May 2025

Martello was engaged by a bank’s compliance team to review 27 trading alerts in relation to trading in the bond market, by one of the bank’s senior traders. Martello provided a consulting team to investigate the trading activity, to provide an opinion on if the activity was likely to be spoofing (market manipulation and misconduct).

We had two experts engaged to provide their separate independent reviews of the alerts before discussing their differences of opinion. This resulted in the combination of their opinions in an internal report that was shared with the bank’s compliance team with regard to whether there was a credible explanation for the trading activity. During the process, the experts discussed their findings with the bank’s compliance team and provided feedback on the bank’s own analysis of the alerts. This allowed the bank to independently verify their analysis before resolving the issue.
